Chatterbox Audio Theater

Chatterbox Audio Theater is a non-profit web-based community theater that advances the exchange of ideas by channeling creativity and artistic collaboration into recorded audio works that enlighten, entertain, and inspire.

Founded in 2007, Chatterbox produces full-cast dramatic audio recordings that are available for free streaming and download. Pairing an “Old Time Radio” style of production (relying on manual sound effects and simultaneous performances) with a distinctly modern sensibility, Chatterbox is radio theater for the podcast generation. Chatterbox shows include new adaptations of classic literature (such as Joyce, Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson, Greek myths, and others), original works, children’s shows, recordings of live performances, and more.

Based in Memphis with additional productions created in Kansas City, MO, Chatterbox is a deeply collaborative project that utilizes dozens of local actors, musicians, visual artists, sound engineers, and sound effects artists. Chatterbox shows have been featured on radio stations and podcasts across the country — including Memphis’s own WKNO-FM, where the group performs live on-air every Halloween night.

All Chatterbox productions are available for free streaming and download from the Chatterbox website or through the iTunes store. Shows are produced under a Creative Commons license, and sharing and trading is encouraged.

In addition to its recordings and live performances, Chatterbox teaches interactive workshops for area schools and community organizations and offers free PDF Education Guides along with select shows. These guides help teachers incorporate Chatterbox productions into their classrooms.

Chatterbox is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is guided by a five-member board of directors. The group maintains a dedicated recording studio in Memphis.
